Resources & Tips

Local Buses:

'Dala Dalas' are the local buses that run throughout Northern Tanzania

  • Keep small change with you.
  • Be aware that the typical price for a bus ride is around 200- 400 shillings.

General Safety:

  • At night, take taxis directly to your destination. Avoid walking or using the Dala Dala (local bus system).
  • If carrying a large amount of money and/or passports, keep them hidden in a travel pouch separate from small change.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and use good judgment.

Volunteer Placement:

  • Bring your own laptop because access to computers is often expensive and difficult
  • If asked for a financial contribution, do not give more than you feel comfortable with. Keep in mind that the majority of these organizations rely on volunteers for a large portion of their fundraising, which is why they feel the need to ask for money.

Accommodations:

  • Each NGO gave us several recommendations as to where their volunteers could stay
  • For specific information on long-term accommodations, ask coordinator at volunteer placement or e-mail us at apltraveled@gmail.com
