Moivaro School

The newly built Moivaro Foundation School is in Moivaro Village, which is roughly 15 km from Arusha Town. Moivaro is a small village where most of the population lives on less than a dollar a day. The original Moivaro School was founded by the mothers in the village who believed it was important to create a school so the village children would stay off the streets.

Prior Conditions: In 2007, the school in Moivaro Village held classes for between 30-40 students in a wobbly shack that lacked electricity, plumbing, and learning supplies. The class size fluctuated daily depending on the weather and the season.

Defying the Odds: We raised over $25,000 and worked with the local church who donated the land for the new school. We enlisted the help of Thompson Akyoo, a local Tanzanian, to help with the planning and construction. It took five months to build the new school, which includes one large classroom and three toilets. Today, Moivaro Foundation School provides an education to 70 students.

Before and After

Bricks + Books Mission: In order to ensure that the school would be self-sustaining, we worked with local women to establish two stores that would generate on-going revenue to cover the operating costs of the school. Additionally, Bricks + Books continues to work with the school's teacher, Joyce, to improve her access to teacher training.

Current Projects: Bricks + Books is continuing to work with the mothers to run the store fronts, is raising funds for solar panels to produce electricity, and is helping implement adult literacy classes that will be held in the school.
